Dr. Malcolm Campbell explains synthetic biology, specifically manipulations that might allow for bacteria to do digital and analog computing. He considers to the ethical and religious objections that might arise in response to synthetic biology, as well as documenting the relationship between “religiosity” and ethical objections to this field. Dr. Campbell also offers pedagogical suggestions for interdisciplinary collaboration that gives students meaningful roles in academic research.

Dr. Malcolm Campbell is Professor of Biology and Genomics Director at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. Dr. Campbell has published several books, including Integrating Concepts in Biology, an electronic textbook that has received praise for its “novel, highly effective method” of teaching. Dr. Campbell is the Director of the Genome Consortium for Active Teaching (GCAT).
